How did the Freddies get their name? The Freddies were inspired by Sir Freddie Laker, who in 1978 was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to commercial aviation and the British economy. Known for his pioneering marketing ideas within the travel industry in the 1970s, Laker founded Britain's first all-jet air carrier, Laker Airways Limited. He also founded the "SKYTRAIN" service, which revolutionized the airline industry by offering no-reservation, low-cost air service. How are the winners of the Freddies determined? Each person who votes for the Freddies is also asked to rate their choice from 1-10. This allows travelers to not only choose the best program in nine different categories, but also rate their choices with 10 equating the highest score possible. Freddie winners are then chosen from those who score the highest average in delivering membership benefits and value. This is a change from the popular vote, which was used, in the first nine years of the presentation of the Freddie Awards. With the return of Value Voting, this year's voting will once again focus on quality and not quantity. How many votes a program receives does not matter, but the overall merits of what each program has to offer will determine the winners. When and where are the winners of the Freddies announced? Freddie Award winners are announced to the public at an annual awards ceremony. Freddie Award winner information is also released to the media the day the winners are announced. In addition, winners are announced in the May issue of InsideFlyer. Also, don't forget to check out the past Freddie Award winners.
