Norwegian invents some Spenn-ing money

Best Promotion — Airlines, Europe & Africa · Norwegian Reward — Spenn: New Loyalty Currency

Points.

Miles.

CashPoints.

And now:

Spenn.

Norwegian’s introduction of the new Nordic loyalty currency wins Best Promotion in Europe & Africa.

Spenn launched in November 2024 as a shared loyalty currency initially linking Norwegian and Strawberry Hotels, allowing members to earn and use the currency across participating brands. Norwegian later described it as usable for Norwegian flights, Strawberry hotels and other parts of an expanding ecosystem.

That makes this more interesting than a normal promotion.

It was effectively a loyalty experiment.

Instead of a currency trapped inside one travel company, Spenn was designed to live across brands.

Airline today.

Hotel tomorrow.

Potentially groceries and other everyday categories too.

That sounds familiar because transferable currencies have already transformed credit-card loyalty.

Norwegian and Strawberry were asking:

Why shouldn’t travel brands build one themselves?

Freddie voters liked the question.

And the answer.

TRIVIA: “Spenn” is wonderfully close to “spend.”

Which is, conveniently, what loyalty programs hope you’ll do.
